Rep. Keith Wheeler penned a scathing op-ed printed in the Chicago Tribune today. He criticized Speaker Madigan and his Democratic majority in the legislature for failing to adopt a revenue estimate in this year’s budget negotiations.
Wheeler was sworn in as a legislator in 2015 and the Illinois General Assembly has not met the constitutional requirement of adopting a revenue estimate in any budget negotiation during those four years. The revenue estimate is a safeguard to ensure that the state cannot spend more money than they expect to take in.
Wheeler is quoted in the article as saying, “In Speaker Madigan’s Springfield, pressure rules. A thoughtful, inclusive budget process is discarded for purely political tactics that create an unnecessary crisis with a terrifying deadline that gives legislators a sense that there is no other alternative and that the state is at the point of no return.”
